SOG 5-01 MOTOR VEHICLE RESCUE ASSIGNMENT
A. Scope:
This operational guideline shall be utilized for MVA Rescue Assignments and priority given to Patient(s) and Crew Safety, Extrication, Suppression, and EMS Operations. Company members must possess the skills required to fulfill their designated riding assignment and assume that responsibility when boarding the apparatus.
B. Guidelines:
1. Radio Designations
a. The radio designation for all positions will be the title of the riding positions preceded by the apparatus number; i.e. Squad 14 Irons, or Squad 14 Officer, etc.
2. Apparatus Placement
a. The first arriving engine will block as much roadway as possible parking on an angle at a safe distance from the MVA to ensure the safety of the crew and the public.
b. These locations are at the discretion of the IC or Company Officer.
c. Additional considerations of the Rescue Driver should be:
i. Keep the rear of the apparatus facing the scene for easy rescue tool deployment
ii. Minimize obstructing pathways for incoming Ambulance and other emergency vehicles
iii. Move supply lines to the side of the road before charging.
iv. Consider wind direction and street grade incline or decline.
3. Firefighter Operations
a. During emergency situations the vehicle battery cables shall be cut.
b. During Non-emergency situations the vehicle battery cable will be disconnected and secured
c. 1 ¾” hose line shall be deployed for safety purposes
d. Vehicle(s) shall be stabilized utilizing struts & cribbing
e. Firefighters shall don rescue gloves
f. Rescue tools shall be deployed when required
g. Company Officer shall communicate with BLS and ALS prior to utilizing any rescue tools. Communication is Imperative and Safety is a Priority
4. MVA Rescue Riding Assignments
a. Driver
i. Tool Assignment:
(a) Radio/Headset
(b) Vest
ii.Responsibilities:
(a) Safe arrival at the scene
(b) Proper apparatus placement for Scene Safety and Rescue Operations
(c) Supply Power
(d) Initiate Pump Operations/Water Supply
(e) Establish lighting and immediate traffic control measures
b. Officer
i. Tool Assignment:
(a) Radio
(b) Light
(c) Safety Goggles
ii. Responsibilities:
(a) Establish command if not already established
(b) Perform initial size up and Assessment
(c) Coordinate Extrication, Suppression & EMS Operations
(d) Ensure Safe Scene Operations
c. Nozzle man
i. Tool Assignment:
(a) Light
(b) Hose line
(c) Safety goggles
(d) EMS equipment (if limited or no EMS present)
ii. Responsibilities:
(a) Deploy hose line to vehicle
(b) Assist with stabilization
(c) Secure power to vehicle
(d) Operate hose line if necessary
d. Tools man # 1 (primary tool operator)
i. Tool Assignment:
(a) Light
(b) Tarp
(c) Extrication Tools (halligan, punch, sawzall)
(d) Tool Bag
(e) Safety Goggles
ii. Responsibilities:
(a) Assist the Officer with size up & EMS Operations
(b) Secure power to vehicle
(c) Primary Tool Operator
e. Tools man #2 (Secondary Tool Operator)
i. Tool Assignment:
(a) Light
(b) Extrication Tools (power cord)
(c) Safety Goggles
ii. Responsibilities:
(a) Assist with stabilization
(b) Secure power to vehicle
(c) Secondary tool operator
f. Stabilization
i. Tool Assignment:
(a) Light
(b) Stabilization Devices (Cribbing/Struts)
(c) Safety Goggles
ii. Responsibilities:
(a) Four Point Stabilization of Vehicle(s)
(b) Ensure Power is secured to all vehicles
